Themes

In this age of globalisation, transnationalism has become a major issue of the twenty-first century when the world is sewn together in a new patch work design. Characterized as 'border crossing', it underlines and permeates almost all aspects of a nation's life - from the economy to politics, from culture to the environment - while establishing no territorial center of power nor relying on fixed boundaries or barriers. It does not signal the end of the nation-state but it does mean that we can no longer think within its framework. Under transnationalism, the world is in transition to a new phase of modernity with an entire array of new phenomena, new communities, new threats and new cultures, all of which need to be identified, described and interpreted.
What the 10th International Conference on Thai Studies intends to do is to explore diverse impacts of transnationalism on Thai society: how it effects the nation's prospects and identities; what kind of challenges await Thai society; how traditions could be modified and new mechanisms devised to cope with current and emerging challenges; and how Thailand can contribute to the world's prospects. To accomplish this task, Thai studies scholars and researchers from all disciplines and intellectual perspectives are invited to submit papers on 'Thai Societies in a Transnationalized World', as exemplied by the following topics:-

  • Alternative Economics
  • Architecture in Transnationalized World
  • Art, Literature and Music
  • Border's Trade
  • Buddhism in the Modern World
  • Contesting Global Governance: Multilateral Economic Institutions and Social Movements
  • Current Situation of Mass Media
  • Democracy under Globalization
  • Diaspora and Thailand
  • Globalizing Civic Engagement and Transnational Advocacy
  • Law and Society
  • Medicine and Society
  • The Mekong Basin in Transnationalized World
  • Natural and Man-made Disasters
  • The Problem of Identity
  • Research Methodology for Thai Studies in Transnationalized World
  • Science and Society
  • Southern Crisis and the Globalized World
  • Tai as Transnationalized Studies
  • Thai History in Global Contexts
  • Transnationalized Corruptions
  • Transnationalized Terrorism at the New Global Disorder
